WASHINGTON — A global legal battle between the two largest makers of computer processors took an abrupt turn this week when the Federal Trade Commission opened a formal antitrust investigation of the Intel Corporation.

For years, Advanced Micro Devices, a smaller rival of Intel, has been scouring the world in search of regulators in Europe, Asia and the United States who would agree to prosecute Intel for what A.M.D. maintains are anticompetitive pricing practices.

Rumor: Ex-Lucasarts Staffer Talks KOTOR 3, More Indy, Wii Lightsaber Game

We’ve continued to receive e-mails throughout the day from folks who it seems are now formerly in the employ of Lucasarts, telling us this and that about the circumstances behind their departure from the company. But few are as revealing as one we were sent earlier this evening. One former employee has told us not only how he was immediately sacked after six years of service, but how wide-ranging the layoffs appear to be, and the impact they’ll supposedly have on many of Lucasart’s upcoming projects. Some of them as-yet-unannounced. Projects like KOTOR 3, a Wii Star Wars title and the non-Lego Indiana Jones game.

‘Age Of Conan’ Ships One Million Copies

Funcom sent out a press release announcing that Age of Conan has shipped a million copies in the first 3 weeks in the market, making it the most successful PC game in the western world, including the US, UK, Germany, and France. With critical acclaim, huge sales numbers, and a very large install base for a new MMO, it’s no wonder they’re so proud.

Analyst: Xbox 360 in Trouble in Europe

David Cole, an analyst from DFC Intelligence, believes that the Xbox 360 will “struggle” in Europe during 2008

He claims that it is because the Xbox 360 has an “urban, irreverent adult male feel; so it hasn’t gained traction in the more casual gaming markets of mainland Europe such as France, Spain and Italy, where it’s stalled.”

Secret Apprentice Joins ‘Soulcalibur IV’

We’ve heard the news that Darth Vader and Yoda will be playable characters in upcoming fighting game Soulcalibur IV, but another Star Wars dude will be in the game as well. Will we be blasting fools as Han Solo? Jet-packing around with Boba Fett? Doing nothing while Jar Jar Binks is beaten into a bloody mist? Nope! Better! The new character is the much beloved Secret Apprentice!

Wait, who?

The Secret Apprentice! The star of The Force Unleashed! The apprentice of Darth Vader! If you haven’t heard of him yet, but you will. That’s him in the pic above. He fights with a lightsaber, and is available in both the 360 and PS3 version of the game, so it’s marginally cooler than if they had made, say, Lando Calrissian a playable character, but not as cool as, say, Chewbacca.

Soulcalibur IV is dropping on the Xbox 360 and PS3 on July 29. Star Wars: The Force Unleashed is coming for the PS3, Xbox 360, Wii, PlayStation 2, PlayStation Portable, and Nintendo DS on September 16.

Also: Games are not for kids. Not a single kiddy game or Nintendo cute-fest broke the top 10.

Zelnick: Expect BioShock Film Alongside BioShock 3

Don’t expect the BioShock film to launch simultaneously with BioShock 2, Strauss Zelnick said on the company’s call to investors today.

“It’s more likely that it would be released coincident with BioShock 3 - that also remains to be seen,” he added. Looks like we can expect a BioShock trilogy, at least.

An analyst also asked Zelnick whether Take-Two has any creative control over the film. Sticking strictly to financial terms, Zelnick said, “We definitely did structure this deal so that we have no economic exposure or risk… the economic exposure or risk is being borne by… Universal Pictures.”

No financial risk would suggest little to no creative control, but he declined to disclose specifics of the agreement.
